On 29 April 2025, over 1600 Entelectuals assembled across multiple continents for DevDay, Entelect's bi-annual tech conference.
This quarter’s anime-themed conference brought together our global community across Cape Town and Johannesburg, with simultaneous live watch parties streaming to offices worldwide. The day kicked off in true anime style with the iconic Pokémon theme song introducing each speaker - a playful nod that set the tone for an event where serious technical content met the spirit of anime storytelling.
Lightning Talks: Power-Ups for Professional Growth
The day featured an impressive lineup of lightning talks covering everything from personal development to cutting-edge technical deep-dives:
Duncan Forssman delivered "Mastering Your Internal Code," a developer's guide to self-esteem and growth mindset, exploring how psychological resilience is becoming as crucial as technical skills in our rapidly evolving industry.
Lijani van Wyk de Vries presented "The Battle Behind the Bots," taking attendees through the epic technical journey of building Entelect's bot programming challenge platform - where developers' creations wage digital warfare in carefully crafted virtual battlefields.
Renette Ros offered a masterclass in "How Garbage Collectors Work," demystifying memory management algorithms through the clever metaphor of "self-cleaning castles" and diving deep into the technical intricacies that keep our applications running smoothly.
CTO Matthew Butler brilliantly presented "Refactoring Entelect," using software architecture principles to explain the company's organisational evolution from startup "monolith" to domain-driven design, whilst humorously revealing what management actually entails beyond "paying people" and "overpromising."
James Gezane delivered "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants," tracing the fascinating evolution of communication, transportation, and technology from Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone sketch to today's smartphones, challenging attendees to consider their responsibility as technologists in shaping human relationships.
Tech Accelerator: From Space to the Fast Lane
The interactive exhibitions from Tech Accelerator entrants provided hands-on experiences with cutting-edge projects. This year brought a significant change - the committee shifted from their traditional space theme to Formula One racing. In their promotional video, they declared "Not the space theme again" before introducing their high-speed approach. The seven-member crew spanning three continents embraced the racing metaphor, showcasing operations that go "from zero to functional" with precision planning and multi-platform coordination across Teams, Discord, WhatsApp, and "carrier pigeons if necessary."
The Final Boss: Listening Skills Quiz
True to anime tradition, the day concluded with an unexpected challenge - a surprise quiz that tested attendees' listening skills throughout the presentations. This clever twist ensured that the audience of Entelectuals remained engaged and rewarded those who paid attention with prizes.
Tradition Meets Innovation
Despite the anime theme and technical innovations, DevDay maintained its beloved traditions. The day included Entelect's signature combination of pizzas, milkshakes, popcorn, and candy - fuel for both body and mind after an intensive day of learning.
As Bianca McFadyen, Entelect's Marketing and Communications Manager, has noted in previous years: "DevDay is for Entelectuals by Entelectuals." This anime-themed iteration proved that point once again, demonstrating how our people's creativity extends beyond code to event planning, presentation design, and community building.
The event's success across multiple continents reinforces DevDay's position as one of the largest tech conferences in Southern Africa, whilst its anime theme showed that serious technical education can be both informative and entertaining. From personal growth insights to deep technical dives, from organisational wisdom to calls for technological responsibility, the day offered something for everyone.
Until the next DevDay adventure, the quest for knowledge continues.
DevDay continues to be a highlight in the Entelect calendar, providing a unique platform for professional growth, technical learning, and community building.
